Police: Mother shot, killed in ‘violent’ domestic incident

A mother is dead after being shot and killed during what police described as a “violent domestic assault” in Bridgeport on Monday.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Seaview Avenue at 8:10 p.m. on a report of shots fired and someone lying in the road before finding a woman suffering several injuries on Central Avenue just south of the Seaview Avenue intersection, according to Capt. Kevin Gilleran of the Bridgeport Police Department.

The woman was unresponsive and was pronounced dead by medics who arrived on scene, Gilleran said. Investigators identified the victim as a 27-year-old mother from Bridgeport. Authorities were withholding her name, as police were still making next of kin notifications, according to Gilleran.

Patrol officers secured the scene before the Detective Bureau’s Homicide Squad responded and took the lead on the investigation, Gilleran said. Detectives from the Forensic Identification Unit are also assisting in the investigation.

Detectives have been collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. A preliminary investigation has suggested thus far that the woman was killed in a domestic incident in which she knew her attacker, Gilleran said.

According to Gilleran, a man wanted for questioning to the woman’s death was found dead in Stratford on Tuesday morning.

Gilleran said the Stratford Police Department has taken the lead on the untimely death investigation and next of kin have been notified.

“We are saddened by what appears to be another senseless death stemming from domestic violence and claiming the life of a young mother in Bridgeport,” Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence Chief Executive Officer Meghan Scanlon said in a statement.

Scanlon said last year in Connecticut a total of 19 people, including 18 women, were killed by an intimate partner.

“Domestic violence isn’t always obvious,” she continued. “It’s the child that cries when voices are raised. It’s the woman who tells her friends, ‘he’s not that bad,’ or, ‘it was my fault.’ The fact is that domestic violence is a preventable public health crisis that impacts us all.

“It’s in all of our communities and we have all been affected by it either directly or indirectly,” Scanlon added. “And we all have a responsibility to prevent and end this kind of violence in our communities by learning the warning signs, holding those around us accountable, and raising awareness about the free domestic violence services available in each community.”

Scanlon said the coalition urges anyone “questioning their own relationship or that of a family member or friend” to reach out and speak with an advocate. Resources that are “safe, free, and confidential” are available across the state at CCADV’s 18 member organizations and accessible 24/7 through Safe Connect, Connecticut’s domestic violence information and resource line, according to Scanlon.

“You can call or text 888-774-2900 or visit www.CTSafeConnect.org to chat or email with an advocate,” Scanlon said. “No one has to navigate their safety alone.”

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact Det. Keith Hanson at 203-581-5243. Information can also be left at the Bridgeport Police Tips line at 203-576-TIPS.

“There are no outstanding suspect(s) in the Bridgeport homicide investigation,” Gilleran said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The Bridgeport Police Department offers their sincerest condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” Gilleran said in the statement. “Our continued thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family.”
