Vogue names these Conn. areas on list of 'gorgeous New England leaf peeping destinations'

Mystic and Litchfield County were among Vogue's list of nine "gorgeous New England leaf peeping destinations to visit now" released on Tuesday.

Since the first and second weeks of October, areas across Connecticut have experienced peak foliage, including Litchfield County. For those looking to take in the colors while they're still at peak, take a leaf-peeping trip across Connecticut to Mystic, which is expected to see peak fall foliage starting next week into early November.

Other areas on the list included Boston and the Berkshires in Massachusetts, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, Newport in Rhode Island, Kennebunkport and Portland in Maine and Stowe in Vermont.

Here's why Litchfield County and Mystic are destinations to visit for leaf peeping, according to Vogue.

    Litchfield County

In addition to its fall foliage, road-tripping, farm standing and antiquing are among the things to do in Litchfield County that make it a "charming" place to be, according to Vogue.

"Driving the ninety minutes up from New York City to this northwest corner of the Constitution State is like driving back in time," Vogue wrote.

In the roundup, Vogue cited Litchfield County's Mayflower Inn & Spa located in Washington, which was named the most charming small town in Connecticut by AFAR travel magazine in January "for its cozy vibes that serve as the inspiration for Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls."

The Mayflower Inn & Spa features a 1920-built English country house with a cozy library and parlor, three cottages, 28 rooms, seven suites and outdoor fields.

Another town in Litchfield County, Kent, was included in a list of 20 small towns in the United States with "the most beautiful fall foliage" published in September.

    Mystic

Mystic's history, food destinations and waterfront are among the reasons to visit the town, according to Vogue.

"Being just a quick train ride from Boston or New York City makes this coastal Connecticut town a popular weekend getaway for city folk—and its charming surroundings make it a favorite shoot location for Hallmark movies," Vogue wrote.

Vogue mentioned the Mystic Aquarium, the Delamar Mystic hotel and Shipwright's Daughter, whose chef, David Standrige, was named the best chef in the Northeast by the James Beard Foundation in June, as attractions to visit.

Mystic made Country Living's list of the best fall towns in the U.S. for fall foliage in 2023. Its quaint atmosphere has charmed its residents and visitors alike during the fall season, and visitors can access the town through Route 1, one of the state's most scenic drives to view fall foliage.
