Conn. man arrested for DUI after allegedly driving 100 mph on Route 2, gave concert as reason

A Connecticut man is facing DUI charges after allegedly being clocked driving around 100 mph on Route 2 in Bozrah on Thursday.

Troop K in Colchester received a 911 call about an erratic driver on Route 2 East in the Bozrah area around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Connecticut State Police.

The 911 caller alleged that a black Volkswagen Jetta was traveling at an extremely high speed and passing other traffic in an unsafe manner, state police said.

A trooper assigned to Troop K was actively patrolling Route 2 East at the time and saw a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller. The trooper began to clock the Volkswagen’s speed and allegedly observed speeds ranging from 95-100 mph, according to state police.

The trooper activated the cruiser’s emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The driver, identified as 59-year-old Steven Hettrick of Middlefield, complied and pulled over in the area of Exit 22 in Bozrah, state police said.

Asked the reason for his speed, Hettrick allegedly told the trooper he was running late for a concert, according to state police. The trooper alleged that Hettrick was exhibiting signs of intoxication including watery eyes with pinpoint pupils and administered standardized field sobriety testing, which Hettrick allegedly failed, state police said.

Hettrick allegedly admitted to troopers that he consumed alcohol and cannabis before driving, according to state police. Chemical testing later conducted at Troop K allegedly revealed that Hettrick’s blood alcohol content was over the legal limit, state police said.

Hettrick was arrested and charged with reckless driving and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, according to state police. Officials said it was Hettrick’s second DUI charge.

Hettrick was later released from custody on a $3,500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on Nov. 19.
