Man tased during traffic stop after allegedly driving 90 mph on I-91 in Windsor

A Connecticut man is facing reckless driving and interfering charges after he was stopped for allegedly driving at speeds over 90 mph on Interstate 91 in Windsor on Tuesday.

Troopers were conducting aggressive driving enforcement on I-91 North and South in the area of Hartford and Windsor around 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Connecticut State Police.

A trooper allegedly clocked two vehicles driving at 90 and 92 mph on I-91 South in the area of Exit 38, state police said. The trooper activated the cruiser’s emergency lights and siren to stop both cars, but the lead vehicle failed to comply and continued traveling southbound, according to state police.

The trooper alleged that the driver drastically reduced their speed to 40-50 mph while traveling in the center lane. They radioed ahead to another trooper who pulled over the car, state police said.

After stopping, the state police alleged that the driver, later identified as 24-year-old Myles Edwards of Windsor Locks, got out of his vehicle and began to approach the trooper’s cruiser “in an agitated state.” The trooper requested backup and ordered Edwards to return to his vehicle, which he allegedly refused to do, according to state police.

The trooper attempted to detain Edwards, who allegedly resisted and continued to do so even after the arrival of a backup unit, state police said.

Edwards was given clear verbal commands to place his hands behind his back and refused to do so, state police allege.

According to state police, Edwards tried to reach into the pockets of his jacket, which had not yet been searched. He was given additional verbal commands that he would be tased if he continued to resist.

Edwards was tased and placed in handcuffs, state police said. He was then evaluated by EMS personnel on the scene.

After Edwards received medical treatment, he was transported to Troop H in Hartford where he was processed and charged with reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer and interfering with an officer/resisting.

Edwards was being held on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Hartford Superior Court on Dec. 3.
