HARTFORD (AP) — A Connecticut police officer who shot and killed a man during a traffic stop last year has been cleared of wrongdoing, a prosecutor investigating the case said.

Hartford police Detective Zack Sherry reasonably believed his life and those of his fellow officers were in danger and was justified when he shot Alphonso Zaporta on July 26, Tolland State’s Attorney Matthew Gedansky said in his report released Thursday.

The use of force resulting in Zaporta’s death was justified under Connecticut state law to protect “officers and civilians in the immediate area from the use of imminent physical force,” the report said.

State police say Sherry and other officers were trying to pull over the 41-year-old Zaporta's vehicle.

He eventually got out his car and wrestled with another officer. Sherry shot Zaporta three times after it appeared he'd gained control of the other officer's gun.

Zaporta was wanted on two arrest warrants related to domestic violence complaints by ex-girlfriends and was a suspect in a shooting. Police found a gun that had been reported stolen in his vehicle.
